Within the scope of the “Renewable Energy Resource Areas (YEKA)” strategy carried out under the leadership of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, new tenders have been announced to increase Turkey’s installed solar energy capacity. The Ministry aims to accelerate large-scale solar power plant (GES) projects to bolster national energy supply security and the share of clean energy.

Main Details

Total Capacity: In the new tenders, a total of 2,000 MW (2 GW) of solar energy capacity is planned to be commissioned in various cities.

Distribution: The projects will be implemented in more than 10 provinces, primarily in Central Anatolia, Southeastern Anatolia, and the Aegean Region, which have high solar energy potential.

Domestic Production Requirement: A high proportion of domestic contribution is mandatory in the production of panels and equipment for YEKA projects. In this way, the local industry is supported, and dependency on foreign energy technologies is reduced.

Ministry Statement

In a written statement from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, it was emphasized that Turkey continues its goal of multiplying its renewable energy capacity by 2035. The statement said, “Solar energy is an area where we can achieve rapid growth by leveraging our country’s geographical advantages. In line with this, we are both encouraging investors and supporting an environmentally friendly energy transition.”

The Importance of Solar Tenders

  • Energy Supply Security: New solar power plants contribute to meeting the country’s electricity needs with cleaner and more local resources.
  • Employment and Localization: Thanks to the domestic production requirements in the tenders, an increase in employment is anticipated in panel factories and related industries.
  • Reduction in Carbon Emissions: Solar power plant projects support Turkey’s goals in combating climate change and fulfilling its international commitments.

Implementation Timeline

  • Application and Preliminary Selection: Investors will submit bids for YEKA solar tenders on the dates specified by the Ministry.
  • Evaluation and Announcement of Results: Following technical and financial qualification reviews, the winning companies or consortia will be announced.
  • Installation Phase: After the tender results are announced, site preparation, infrastructure work, and panel installations will begin.
  • Commissioning: The Ministry aims for the first facilities to start producing electricity during the 2025–2026 period.

Progress in Energy Transition

Experts note that with the new YEKA solar tenders, Turkey’s total installed solar power capacity will rapidly move toward the 20 GW level. This development will increase the share of renewable sources in the electricity generation portfolio, also helping to reduce energy imports.
